Prof. Fauzan to Open Waste Bank, Give Speech at Unismuh's 88th Graduation Ceremony

UNISMUH.AC.ID, MAKASSAR — The Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Wamendiktisaintek), Prof Dr Fauzan MPd, is scheduled to attend the 88th Graduation Ceremony of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar (Unismuh Makassar), Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Muktamar Conference Hall, Unismuh Makassar Campus, Sultan Alauddin Street, Makassar.

During the event, Prof Fauzan is scheduled to deliver a scientific speech and officially open the Unismuh Makassar Sustainable Waste Solutions Center (SWSC) Waste Bank. The presence of the Wamendiktisaintek is an important part of the 88th Graduation Ceremony, which not only includes academic proceedings, but also emphasizes Unismuh's commitment to building a green, sustainable, and impactful campus.

Prof Andi Sukri Syamsuri, Vice Rector I of Unismuh Makassar, known as Prof Andis, stated that the presence of the Wamendiktisaintek is an honor for Unismuh Makassar. According to him, Prof Fauzan's presence not only strengthens the momentum of the graduation, but also demonstrates the government's attention to the transformation of higher education, the strengthening of academic quality, and innovation in the eastern region of Indonesia.

"InsyaAllah, the 88th Graduation Ceremony of Unismuh Makassar will be attended by the Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof Dr Fauzan MPd. He is scheduled to deliver a scientific speech and officially open the Unismuh Makassar SWSC Waste Bank," said Prof Andis.

Number of Graduates

Prof Munirah, Chairman of the 88th Unismuh Graduation Committee, added that the 88th Graduation will be attended by 1,411 graduates from nine faculties and postgraduate programs. "Of these, there are 366 male graduates and 1,045 female graduates," added Prof Munirah.

The graduates consist of 255 students from the Faculty of Teacher Education and Islamic Studies (FKIP), 404 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), 280 students from the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI), 48 students from the Faculty of Engineering, 99 students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), 68 students from the Faculty of Agriculture, 153 students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), 3 students from the Faculty of Law, and 101 postgraduate students.

According to Prof Munirah, graduation is not just a graduation ceremony, but also an academic responsibility of the university to the community. Through graduation, Unismuh presents graduates who have undergone the education, academic guidance, character strengthening, and institutional support processes in order to contribute to society.

"Graduation is a moment of academic responsibility. It contains the trust of knowledge, the prayers of parents, the hard work of students, and the responsibility of the campus to produce graduates who are beneficial," he said.

Spirit I-GIFt

Meanwhile, Dr Ihyani Malik, Vice Rector II of Unismuh Makassar, affirmed that Unismuh operates within the framework of the I-GIFt transformation, which is Integrated, Green, Islamic, and Futuristic. In this framework, the Green aspect is embodied through concrete steps to build a green campus culture, including strengthening the SWSC and Unismuh Waste Bank.

Ihyani said that the SWSC is part of Unismuh's effort to build campus governance that is not only administratively orderly, but also ecologically responsible. According to him, the campus must be a space for education that shapes the behavior of academics in managing waste from its source.

"The Waste Bank is not just a place to collect waste. It is an educational instrument, a cultural change, and an environmental governance strengthening. We want campus residents to be accustomed to sorting, collecting, weighing, recording, and seeing waste as a resource that has value," said Ihyani.

Ihyani explained that the SWSC has been developed as a sustainable waste management center in the Unismuh environment. The program includes waste sorting from its source, strengthening the waste bank, reducing the use of single-use plastic, organic waste processing through compost and maggot, as well as the development of creative products from inorganic waste. Through this system, waste is no longer understood as the end of the line, but as part of the circular economy that can provide ecological and economic benefits.

The SWSC has been officially designated as an official campus waste management institution through a Rector's Decision Number 494 in 2025. From the beginning, this movement is not only aimed at providing facilities, but also building new behaviors among campus residents. The initial program of the SWSC began through socialization and technical training for cleaning services as the frontline of campus cleanliness.

In its development, the SWSC not only manages the waste bank, but also builds an environmental education ecosystem. The Waste Bank and SWSC Compost House are introduced as examples of combining ecological and economic aspects, as well as being a learning laboratory for students about circular economy, waste management, and social charity.

The Unismuh Waste Bank movement now produces a number of products from inorganic waste and household waste, such as soap and candle made from waste vegetable oil, as well as creative bags made from plastic bottles. This program opens up opportunities for community-based waste management that not only solves environmental problems, but also creates economic value.

"For us, the opening of the Unismuh SWSC by Prof. Fauzan on the 88th Graduation Ceremony is very strategic. Therefore, graduation is not just a ceremony to release graduates, but also an opportunity to show the direction of campus transformation that we are building. Unismuh wants to prove that universities not only produce graduates and develop research, but also able to present real solutions to environmental problems," said Ihyani.

Through the SWSC and Waste Bank, Unismuh Makassar strives to make this principle a work culture and a collaborative movement. The presence of Prof. Fauzan in the 88th Graduation Ceremony and the opening of the SWSC Waste Bank is expected to strengthen the support for Unismuh's step towards a progressive, impactful, and globally reputable campus in the spirit of I-GIFt.
