UNIMUH Makassar, Rank 4 Nasional and 20 Globally on UI GreenMetric 2025 for Open Spaces and Green Infrastructure

UNISMUH.AC.ID, MAKASSAR — The University of Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar has ranked 20th globally and 4th nationally in the category of open spaces and green infrastructure in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. This achievement reflects the category of Setting and Infrastructure, which assesses campus governance, the proportion of green open spaces, and support for sustainable infrastructure.

Official UI GreenMetric 2025 data shows that Unismuh achieved a score of 1.425 in this subcategory. Complete information can be accessed through the official UI GreenMetric website:

This achievement was conveyed by the Vice Rector I of Unismuh, Prof. Andi Sukri Syamsuri, when responding to questions from journalists about Unismuh's monumental achievement, on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

According to Prof. Andi, an affectionate nickname for Vice Rector I of Unismuh, this ranking signifies that Unismuh's investment in the development of green areas and sustainable infrastructure is now recognized at the global level.

"This is not an instant result. There has been a long process of campus space management and consistent data support. Furthermore, under the leadership of Rector Dr. Abdul Rakhim Nanda, Unismuh has adopted the slogan I-Gift, or Integrated Green Islamic Futuristic," added Prof. Andi.

Unismuh's Green Areas

The strengthening of the open spaces and green infrastructure subcategory is supported by the area and distribution of educational facilities managed by Unismuh. In addition to the main campus on Sultan Alauddin Street, this campus also has educational units on Ranggong Street and Pettarani III Street.

In addition, the development of health and medical education facilities also strengthens the campus infrastructure indicators. Unismuh Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine campus on Tun Abdul Razak Street occupy an area of approximately 3 hectares and are designed with an integrated campus governance concept.

Unismuh also manages the Bollangi Training Center, which covers an area of approximately 12 hectares, dominated by green open spaces. In the Gowa highlands, this campus has land in Bissoloro, covering approximately 72 hectares, which serves as a field laboratory for the Faculty of Agriculture and also as the location of the Darul Fallaah Islamic Boarding School.

In the Barru Regency, Unismuh manages approximately 229 hectares of the Pacekke Forest in the Soppeng Riaja sub-district. The handover of the area was carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2022.

The Director of Unismuh Global Excelence Center (Unismuh International Competitiveness Institute), Prof. Hartono Bancong, explains that this achievement is the result of the collective efforts of various units in documenting sustainability indicators according to global standards.

"UI GreenMetric not only assesses the presence of green spaces, but also the consistency of policies, data integration, and the continuity of programs," said Hartono.

Process and Global Standards

The Vice Rector IV of Unismuh, Dr. Burhanuddin, added that international rankings require campuses not only to have programs, but also measurable performance evidence.

According to him, the data collection and verification process is systematic, starting from the area of green open spaces, environmental management policies, to the integration of sustainability principles in education and research.

"The open spaces and green infrastructure subcategory is the foundation. From there, other indicators such as energy, waste management, water, and transportation can be measured.

Overall Ranking

In the overall 2025 UI GreenMetric ranking, Unismuh ranks 62nd nationally and 624th globally. The achievement was announced in December 2025.

The Rector of Unismuh, Dr. Abd Rakhim Nanda, appreciates the collective work of the academic community. According to him, this achievement is a reflection of the long-term commitment to building a campus that is not only academically excellent, but also responsible for environmental sustainability.

"This ranking is the result of the synergy of all elements of the campus. The challenge is to maintain consistency and improve the quality of management to have a greater impact," said Rakhim.

UI GreenMetric itself assesses universities based on six main indicators, namely governance and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water use, transportation, and sustainable education and research.

For Unismuh Makassar, the ranking of 4th nationally and 20th globally in the UI Greenmetric subcategory of open spaces and green infrastructure is a milestone to strengthen its global reputation and contribute to the campus's agenda for sustainable development.

In addition to UI GreenMetric, Unismuh Makassar is also included in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025 (ranked 1001-1500 globally, and the 16th best PTS in Indonesia). This Muhammadiyah campus in East Indonesia is also included in the THE World University Rankings 2026, as well as the QS Asia University Rankings 2026.

With these achievements, Unismuh Makassar has established its position as one of the best universities in Indonesia with a global reputation.
